Bill to Label Genetically Engineered Foods

Ottawa April 3, 2008 - Today the House of Commons will debate a Private Member’s Bill (C-517) proposed by Gilles-André Perron, Bloc Québécois MP for Rivière-des-Mille-Îles. If adopted, this bill will legislate the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods (also called genetically modified or GM). More than 40 countries across the world already have adopted labeling laws including Europe, Russia and China.

Ottawa – This week the proposal to build a biofuels plant in PEI came under fire at a hearing of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food that is examining Bill C-33, a Bill that would mandate the use of biofuels in Canada.

Terminator Seeds: Canadian Government admits no capacity to assess impact on farmers
Monday December 4, 2006, Ottawa - On Friday December 1st in Winnipeg, a representative from Agriculture and Agri-food Canada admitted that the department has no capacity to assess the social and economic impacts of Terminator seeds – seeds genetically engineered to be sterile after first planting – before introducing them into Canada.
